What to expect

Hundreds of varieties. All proven here.

Perennials are the backbone of a beautiful low-maintenance garden. Plant them once and enjoy them for years. The selection includes everything from classic hostas and daylilies to dramatic ornamental grasses and native wildflowers. All proven performers in southern Indiana.

The perennial inventory is grown by regional nurseries that start plants in the same climate you garden in. They arrive ready to perform, not recover.

Staff includes Master Gardener volunteers and experienced landscapers who grow these same plants in their own gardens. Recommendations are personal.

A dedicated native and pollinator section supports local ecology while giving you low-maintenance options that thrive without heavy watering or fertilizing.

Expert Tips

The advice given most often at the garden center. Passed along to you.

Plant in Groups of Three or Five

Odd-numbered groupings create a more natural look. Three of the same variety planted together have more visual impact than three different singles.

Deadhead for Extended Bloom

Removing spent flowers encourages many perennials to produce a second flush of blooms. Coneflowers and black-eyed Susans respond especially well.

Divide Every Few Years

Most perennials benefit from division every 3-4 years. It keeps plants healthy, improves flowering, and gives you free plants for other spots.

Professional Installation

I came in for three hostas and left with an entire shade garden plan. The staff helped me pick varieties that bloom at different times so something is always happening in that bed.

Common questions

Perennials questions answered

What is the difference between a perennial and an annual?

Perennials come back on their own each year. Annuals bloom for one season and need to be replanted. Perennials cost more upfront but save money over time because you only buy them once.

When should I plant perennials?

Spring and fall are both great. Fall gives roots extra time to establish before summer heat. Spring works well as long as you water consistently through the first hot months.

Do perennials bloom all season?

Most perennials bloom for a few weeks to a couple of months. By choosing varieties with staggered bloom times, you can have color from April through October.

Will deer eat my perennials?

Some varieties are deer-resistant. Lavender, catmint, salvia, and ornamental grasses are rarely bothered. The staff can point you toward the best options if deer are a problem in your area.

How do I know what will grow in shade?

Every plant on the display tables is tagged with its sun requirements. Look for the shade symbol, or ask a team member to walk you through the shade-tolerant section.
